Open?Cell Foam Benefits
Open?Cell Foam Benefits
New Generation Spray Foam the cozy mattress on your bed to the soundproof studio walls, foam is a dynamic and surprisingly versatile material. It’s also incredibly affordable, and a great choice for insulating new homes or upgrading existing structures. Choosing the right type, however, depends on your specific needs—like water resistance, cushioning or temperature control.
Open-cell foam is soft and breathable, and can be made at both high and low densities. It’s created by rupturing cells, either electronically or chemically. This process makes the foam semi-permeable, allowing air, liquids and sounds to pass through. Open-cell foam is also resilient and can return to its original shape after compression.
Foam Insulation Longevity: Why It Outperforms Traditional Materials
These attributes make open-cell spray foam a good insulation choice, especially in dry climates where vapor diffusion prevents condensation. Contractors use it to seal cracks in attics and roofs, block air movement behind framing and in between floors, and add R-values of up to 3.8 per inch.
Moisture is open-cell spray foam’s kryptonite, however. Without a barrier, it could encourage mold growth, but treated foams resist this. Technicians often find crawl spaces clean of black mold after insulating with open-cell foam, and moisture control reduces odors and pest intrusion too. Foam’s permeability also helps control humidity in basements, and studies show that it limits mold growth more than fiberglass or traditional cellulose. This lowers indoor temperatures and reduces strain on HVAC systems. Compared to drywall, it also installs faster and causes less mess during remodeling.
