AKA how to send 80% of Xstreet merchants running for other marketplaces.

http://blogs.secondlife.com/community/commerce/blog/2009/11/18/roadmap--managing-freebies-on-xstreet-sl

This would be a great time to do some extra promotion for Meta-Life, even word of mouth.

LL needed to do something, but leave it to them to be sure it generated income for them while alienating even more residents.

It's actually a good news for other offworld marketplaces like metaLIFE. Kudos to Linden Labs. LOL!

All I'm hearing now is people pulling their items from Xstreet right now, people with over 1000 items, so much hard work gone into their business and maintaining their listings and customer service over the years and now, stabbed in the back.

I just hope that LL doesn't make a U turn and charge other offworld marketplaces like metaLIFE a fee to operate. With the way LL operates, it's not entirely impossible.

I am curious to see if Linden Lab might attempt to declare e-commerce sites that compete against x$treet a violation of TOS.

I pulled my inventory off of x$ today. I build because I enjoy it, and I've given away a lot of things that I initially created for my own use. The items I sell, I don't sell to make a profit. I sell them so that I have a little extra spending money, or so I can toss a little more into my dollar account so I don't have to pay quite as much out of pocket for my tier.

My biggest items, of course, were the free ones. And that made me happy. Especially all the wonderful comments and letters I received in thanks for them. But when it comes to selling actual merchandise, my inworld sales far eclipsed any sales I made on x$.

Of course, I am making my move to MetaLife in a big way. Of the remaining third-party sites, it seems to be well-designed and also eye-pleasing. I am going to recommend that others do the same.

When Prokofy Neva and I can agree on something ... it's kind of scary.

If Linden Lab declared ecommerce sites a TOS violation, they'd have the US Federal Courts at their throats. Antitrust laws forbid this sort of thing. It's why microsoft can't just declare in the windows EULA that you can't use firefox, openoffice, or other programs that compete with their products.

I ended up joining for much the same reasons, earlier today >.>

i wouldve been only a little put out if they put a small fee on freebies. i mean, i only had three freebies on xstreets, it couldnt hurt me to lose them, or even make then 1L

but nooooooooo... fee everyone and everything >_< good god

i had about 500 items before i deactivated them all. in total, if i had stayed, the monthly xstreet fees wouldve been close to my monthly fee for my mainstore. i cant afford what would be paying for two mainstores! i never put money into SL, because i have virtually no money in RL. my store supports itself and all 4 of its locations, im proud to say. and xstreets only ever generated 1000L per month, on average. not worth 5000L.

but... oh my... its going to take forever to get all of my stuff listed here, and LL's given me a headache >.> at least i got everything in the box

...

on a side note, seems metalife has interesting other features too, soon as i figure em out XD

You'll love the in-world vendors that also acts like an affiliate vendor and you don't need to find an ATM to withdraw or deposit L$. Smile

Just to give everyone a reference on what's going on with people pulling their items off Xstreet...I've been keeping track of the listing numbers since last night. It's pretty drastic...and heartening...to see such a HUGE, unified response to LL's latest blatant, shortsighted moneygrabbing policy.

As of last night at 10:30:

Animals: 14773
Animations: 41687
Apparel: 397677
Art: 41339
Audio/Visual: 150519
Avatar Appearance: 81054
Building Components: 85241
Business: 17265
Celebrations: 43605
Gadgets: 14394
Home & Garden: 184248
Misc: 6074
Recreation: 29507
Scripts: 4766
Services: 453
Used: 1990
Vehicles: 12346
Weapons: 13049

As of 5:10 p.m. today:

Animals: 14353
Animations: 41523
Apparel: 38976
Art: 40303
A/V: 5000
Avatar Accessories: 147708
Avatar Appearance: 79370
Building Components: 83751
Celebrations: 43387
Gadgets: 14213
Home & Garden: 180699
Misc: 5946
Recreation: 28991
Scripts: 4734
Services: 415
Used: 1856
Vehicles: 12171
Weapons: 12845

Obviously, the biggest drop is in Apparel...this number had already dropped by almost 3000 BEFORE I started writing the numbers down. LL has been conspicuously absent from the forum thread since about half an hour after it was originally posted. I can only assume they're hiding under their desks. Bad news for Xstreet...enough is enough. Good news for MetaLIFE!

I checked the "Apparel: 38976" number and its really: Apparel (389647).

I was thinking WOW I cant believe it dropped 358701 items THAT fast! It's actually 8030 removed, which is still significant, but no where near 350, 000 + items. Just a point of clarification.

I do run both XST and Meta, but I guess I will pull mine off XST as well. I make sporadic sales, most of mine around this time of year off XST and but whatever, it's not worth it to me to spend to make.

I'm not sure that LL is hiding under their desks. They are used to people reacting badly to their ideas.

If anything, people pulling their goods out of xStreet is one of the goals they had, anyway, which was to reduce clutter.

The question is: is the stuff being pulled out the sort of thing that was making money for LL, or is it 'just' the freebies and cheap things that (as dollars go) aren't important to LL. And dollars is all they're thinking about, I'm sure.

Likely, when coming up with this bit of brilliance, they did some math and thought "well, we'll likely lose x number of thousands of items, but we'll keep the high end stuff".

Whether or not that'll happen and whether or not the buying public remains interested in the site without the 'cheap stuff' is yet to be seen.

Yep, and I was one of the people that took off a huge amount of things from SLX. As my signature says; Good Riddance.
(Edit: My items had freebies but other items were in the 5000's - 800's.. Oh well, they can nickel and dime other people, not me anymore, I gave too much out of pocket already to their idiotic fees.)

My boss and I just joined meta-life today, thanks to this oh so wonderful decision. She'll be cutting back majorly on what she lists on xstreet (removing 2/3 of her approximately 1,000 products, which almost all sell pretty regularly), while I removed all of my items and have no intention of returning, even to shop.
There were so many ways they could have done this without alienating so many of their customers, but what would LL be if not for their crowd-pleasing tactics? Wink
The good news, though, is it's making a lot of people look at where their money goes, and find ways to either cut back on fees, or at least find a resident-run business to send them to instead of sending them straight to LL.

I will say this. I am happy that LL did this? Why? Because I knew this would happen. It will increase meta-life (which has vendors! Laughing out loud )Visibility as well as decrease xstreet competition (which is still linked to SL search and will eventually be merged into SL search proper). So I will maintain both. Mind you Meta-life still gets priority because of the excellent service and the vendor. I did attend the 3rd office hour for this diecision and was the lone voice of reason on the issue. Nevertheless, I am not going to have freebies on Xstreet anymore either. they will be here exclusively.

I don't know how well I'll sell on meta-life, but I'm also glad LL did this. XStreet was making my life a lot harder than it needed to be. Meta-life cuts my workflow IN HALF. For that, alone, I'm glad LL effed things up. I'd have never found the place so soon otherwise.

List your items, create an item group, create a brand, create branded vendors, give these vendors to friends or to everyone you know. They'll make money selling your items and you'll also make money. Win/Win. ^_^

Any tips for those of us with social anxiety, who don't do well foisting their products on other people (i.e. begging for affiliates)? X3

well, I think it all just started and soon the items on x-street will drop down drasticaly.
as for me I only need some more hours to set up all here on Metalife, before I can delete all on x-street.
cuz writing the discription for about 1000 items is not realy what I had in mind Puzzled
so copy and paste is the better thing.
I would have stayed there if they only charge for the freebies, o.k. it´s some sort of advertising- I could go with this. but being charged for any single item I put up?!
no thanks.
I enjoy what I do and invest my sales in the shoprent and in full perm stuff I cannot create myself yet.
I also would have agreed, if they wanted people to take off old stuff, not selling anymore. I will not transfer everything here, it´s a good time to sort out.
but the fee for each listing, just shows how greedy people can become if they are all ready "on top of the list"....darn!!! just so much like RL Wink

I can only dream, but what I wouldn't give for a special "mass description set" button that would pop up a box or a window that let me input the description for an entire series of items. Laughing out loud

Example:
I have 15 pairs of gloves and about 40 pairs of tights.

I had to manually input the description on every single item page... and I use the same description for the whole set.

Please consider it someday <3

phew! @.@ finally done listing everything... though i cut down on my inventory. cut off things i dont even like anymore.

though, i managed to miss my friends IMs in the process >.> and had alot of complaints. but eh

i actually think it was quicker to get my listings up on here than it would be to list that many items on xstreets. im not sure what would make that difference o.0 but it did

I'm deciding to move all my free and opensource stuff here on metalife. I'll do a try. I hope that this is not going to become the same as xstreet.
Next time it will happen I will do my own website Smile

Let's be intelligent creatures and not greedy people. I'm convinced that it can be possible for anybody to have a fair revenue, but with a fair and transparent policy. metalife runners can have their income, people wanting to sell can do, and people willing to share knowledget and opensource can do. After all the richness of a marketplace is its content, not the price for each good.

Would some people of Metalife assure us they are welcoming free and opensource "sellers" and volunteers.

I'm prepared to do a heavy marketing pro-metalife within my community (and I can assure you they usually listen to me) Smile

I'm very pleased with this site so far and have started to list my items (at least the ones that have a useful inworld texture already or, for th 10L upload charge, I might as well stay at Xstreet for another month Smile

I do wonder, though, if this site will become the "discount basement" of the grid, just as cluttered (to quote LL) with freebies and lowbies, while the high end stuff continues to reside over there. Not necessarily a bad thing, but sure to suffer the same issues with endless searches.
Already, I am seeing long rows of listings for the same item in slightly different colours. I'm still waiting for a listing system that lets you choose the colour option through some sort of dropdown, perhaps.
